She will direct the administration and programs of Local Learning to meet<br \/>\nits strategic plan and ensure the organization\u2019s mission of creating strong<br \/>\npartnerships that advocate for the full inclusion of folklife and folk arts<br \/>\nin diverse educational settings.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rathje has served as the Assistant Director of Local Learning since<br \/>\n2012. Rathje previously served as Director of Folklife Programs with<br \/>\nCompany of Folk in Chicago, Illinois, where she was responsible for<br \/>\nplanning and directing projects focused on identifying, preserving, and<br \/>\npromoting folk and traditional arts. At the Institute for Cultural<br \/>\nPartnerships (2006-2010) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, she conceptualized<br \/>\nand served as project director for the multi-faceted education program The<br \/>\nArt of Many Voices, including curriculum development, assessment, and<br \/>\ncommunity outreach. She will continue to serve as an adjunct faculty member<br \/>\nin the Goucher College Masters in Cultural Sustainability program and will<br \/>\ncontinue to be based in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>Rathje succeeds Paddy Bowman, who will remain with Local Learning in the<br \/>\nposition of Founding Director. As a national thought leader in education,<br \/>\nBowman will focus on offering professional development and training,<br \/>\nwriting publications for academic as well as general audiences, and<br \/>\nnetworking with partners, peer organizations, and Local Learning affiliates<br \/>\nto share best practices, create resources, and advocate for folk arts in<br \/>\neducation. Both directors will continue to co-edit the flagship publication<br \/>\nof Local Learning: The Journal of Folklore and Education, a digital peer<br \/>\nreviewed publication for interdisciplinary, multimedia approaches to<br \/>\ncommunity-based teaching, learning, and cultural stewardship.<\/p>\n<p>In support of this transition, the Board of Directors of Local Learning<br \/>\nissued this statement, \u201cWe embrace the expertise and visionary leadership<br \/>\nthat Lisa will bring to the organization in a time when the relevance and<br \/>\nresilience of folklore and education is more important than ever. We have<br \/>\nfull confidence that Lisa will continue Local Learning\u2019s commitment to<br \/>\ntraditional culture and local knowledge as a way to transform learning,<br \/>\nbuild inter-cultural understanding, and create stronger communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local Learning began as the National Task Force for Folk Arts in Education<br \/>\nduring a 1993 national folk arts roundtable at the National Endowment for<br \/>\nthe Arts. Today, the core activities and programs of Local Learning provide<br \/>\nservices to the field of Folk Arts in Education and support practitioners.<br \/>\nWe convene with other national arts service organizations to ensure folk<br \/>\narts\u2019 presence in national conversations and participate in the crafting of<br \/>\nnational policy and advocacy initiatives.\u00a0 We offer technical assistance,<br \/>\ncirculate news of the field through a variety of media and platforms, and<br \/>\nprovide professional development for educators, folk artists, and<br \/>\nfolklorists.
